RESUMO

A new wide-ranging correlation for the viscosity of xenon, based on the most recent theoretical calculations and critically evaluated experimental data, is presented. The correlation is designed to be used with an existing equation of state, and it is valid from the triple point to 750 K, at pressures up to 86 MPa. The estimated expanded uncertainty (at a coverage factor of k = 2) varies depending on the temperature and pressure, from 0.2 % to 3.6 %. A term accounting for the critical enhancement is also included. The correlation behaves in a physically reasonable manner when extrapolated to 200 MPa, however care should be taken when using the correlations outside of the validated range.

RESUMO

We have previously shown an advantage of a myeloablative conditioning regimen with reduced toxicity (Fludarabine 150 mg/m2, Treosulfan 42 g/m2, FluTreo) compared to a reduced-intensity regimen. We aimed to determine long-term safety and efficacy of FluTreo. We prospectively studied consecutive patients who received FluTreo in our center (2014-2019) on the basis of age (≥50 years), hematopoietic cell transplantation comorbidity index (HCT-CI) ≥2, or both. FluTreo recipients were then compared to a historical control group. We studied 68 FluTreo recipients, with a median age of 58.5 years and HCT-CI of 3. We calculated cumulative incidence (CI) of acute (grade 2-4) and moderate/severe chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) (29.9% and 25%, respectively). The 3-year CI of treatment-related mortality was 19.1%, associated only with acute GVHD (P < .001). With a median follow-up of 27.3 (range 5.7-84.5) months in surviving patients, the 3-year overall survival (OS) was 56.6%, and disease-free survival (DFS) was 54.9%. Median survival has not yet been reached. Among pretransplantation and transplantation factors, only HCT-CI was associated with DFS and OS (P = .022 and P = .043, respectively). FluTreo recipients aged ≥50 with HCT-CI ≤ 2 had favorable DFS and OS compared with patients aged ≥50 with HCT-CI ≤2 after myeloablative conditioning. Our real-world study confirms that HCT with FluTreo expands the transplant population with favorable outcomes compared to previously used conditions. The choice of HCT in patients of a rather older age and comorbidity index needs to be revisited.

RESUMO

We present a new wide-ranging correlation for the thermal conductivity of ethane-1,2-diol (ethylene glycol) based on critically evaluated experimental data. The correlation is designed to be used with an existing equation of state, and it is valid from the triple point to 475 K, at pressures up to 100 MPa. The estimated uncertainty is 2.2 % (at the 95 % confidence level), except in the dilute-gas region which is estimated to be 20 %, as there are no measurements in this region for comparison.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Osteopetrosis is an inherited disease characterized by increased bone density. Its genetic variability results in various phenotype expressions, whereas clinically are classified in three types: malignant infantile, intermediate and adult. The various oral manifestations of the disease give a crucial role to the pediatric dentists in diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old girl with persistent swelling on right cheek visited a pedodontic clinic. After extra- and intra-oral examination/findings, the patient was referred for further investigation concerning a possible general pathological background. An extraction, included in the initial dental treatment plan, led to the diagnosis of osteopetrosis. Various medical examinations co-led to the diagnosis of osteopetrosis but without genetic identification. Extractions of carious teeth, under general anesthesia, and full cover or sealants, on chair, of unaffected teeth were conducted respectively to minimize the microbial load and to prevent from osteomyelitis relapse and new caries. Two more general anesthesia sessions took place due to relapse of lower jaw osteomyelitis. Follow-up was conducted every 3 months for 2 years. CONCLUSION: Osteopetrosis' diagnosis can be triggered by its oral manifestations (rampant caries, osteonecrosis, enamel defects, malformed roots/crowns, missing teeth), for which the pediatric dentist could be the first observer. Management of these patients needs multidisciplinary approach and follow-up appointments should be very frequent.

RESUMO

The available experimental data for the thermal conductivity of liquid copper, gallium, indium, iron, lead, nickel, and tin has been critically examined with the intention of establishing thermal conductivity reference correlations. All experimental data have been categorized into primary and secondary data according to the quality of measurement specified by a series of criteria. The proposed standard reference correlations for the thermal conductivity of liquid copper, gallium, indium, iron, lead, nickel, and tin are respectively characterized by uncertainties of 9.8, 15.9, 9.7, 13.7, 16.9, 7.7, and 12.6% at the 95% confidence level.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the current study the presence of extracellular IL-1B, IL-8, OAZ and SAT mRNAs in the saliva was evaluated as a tool in the early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: 34 patients with primary oral squamous cell carcinoma stage T1N0M0/T2N0M0, 20 patients with oral leukoplakia and dysplasia (15 patients with mild dysplasia and 5 with severe dysplasia/in situ carcinoma) and 31 matched healthy-control subjects were included in the study. The presence of IL-1B, IL-8, OAZ and SAT mRNA was evaluated in extracellular RNA isolated from saliva samples using sequence-specific primers and real-time RT-PCR. ROC curve analysis was used to estimate the ability of the biomarkers to detect oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. RESULTS: The data reveal that the combination of these four biomarkers provides a good predictive probability of up to 80% (AUC=0.799, p=0.002) for patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma but not patients suffering from oral leukoplakia with dysplasia. Moreover, the combination of only the two biomarkers (SAT and IL-8) also raises a high predictive ability of 75.5% (AUC=0.755, p=0.007) approximately equal to the four biomarkers suggesting the use of the two biomarkers only in the prediction model for oral squamous cell carcinoma patients limiting the economic and health cost in half. CONCLUSION: SAT and IL-8 mRNAs are present in the saliva in high quality and quantity, with a good discriminatory ability for oral squamous cell carcinoma patients only but not for patients with oral leukoplakia and dysplasia an oral potentially malignant disorder.

RESUMO

We are presenting a case of giant internal carotid artery aneurysm (ICAA) managed by a new exposure technique. Following double mandibular osteotomy, the exposure of the entire aneurysm was achieved by mandible mobilization. The aneurysm repair was performed by resection and graft interposition. Mandible bone reconstruction was succeeded via mini plate osteosynthesis. No adverse events were noticed during the 24-month follow-up period. The surgical ICAA management is necessary to prevent severe complications. In cases of aneurysm extension to the skull base, double mandibular osteotomy is a safe technique that facilitates aneurysm exposure and control.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Bisphosphonates are compounds used in the treatment of various metabolic and malignant bone diseases. In the last two and a half years, there has been a striking increased referral of patients with exposed necrotic jawbone, mostly after several teeth extractions. The only clinical feature common in all patients was the use of bisphosphonates in the treatment of bone diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective multicentric study of 60 patients with necrotic bone lesions of the jaws of various extent from July 2003 to October 2005. The necrotic bone involved the maxilla (37%), the mandible (50%), or both (13%). The bisphosphonate administered was mostly zoledronate. The management of the patients included cessation of bisphosphonate therapy for more than 6 months, long-term antibiotics, hyperbaric oxygen administration in some cases, and various surgical restorative procedures. RESULTS: The implementation of the treatment protocol in 7 patients so far lead to high cure rates, whereas surgical restoration of the defect without previous cessation of bisphosphonate therapy had discouraging results. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians and dentists should have in mind this new complication of bisphosphonate administration to identify and treat osteonecrosis of the jaws.
